As a yoga teacher, I teach yoga of course. But I also strongly encourage my students to build a lifestyle that helps them to become the healthiest and happiest they can be. We speak extensively about how to achieve that, including topics like diet, detoxing, cross-training, stress management, nutrition and balance in life.
Today, I thought I would share a little tip about diet.
We should all aim to have a nutritious diet, but to do that we need to ensure that the foods we choose are not only healthy, but diverse. This is easier said than done, as most people tend to form the bad habit of putting the exact same items in their shopping cart week after week after week. And although this makes grocery shopping a “no-brainer”, it robs your body of the micro-nutrients you would find in a more diverse diet.
In the not so distant past, our ancestors consumed over a 1,000 different items in their diets. Today, we consume about 100. So here’s your challenge: to improve your overall health and wellness, put a few new things into your shopping cart. If you normally eat apples, try pears. If you normally eat pasta, try rice. If you normally have white potatoes, try red potatoes. You’ll be surprised how good you feel.
